STATEMENT FROM GEORGE COUNTY SHERIFF KEITH HAVARD
REGARDING SCHOOL SAFETY
February 22, 2018
The George County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the George County School District and the Lucedale Police Department, is working overtime to thoroughly investigate any allegations or rumors concerning the safety of our schools and students. In light of recent events, Sheriff Keith Havard and his staff would like to encourage you to be vigilant regarding any rumors your children may hear at school or on social media. While copycat attention-seekers are notorious for fanning the flames of public concern, it is our job as parents and leaders to discourage pranks or jokes, or the perpetuation of rumors. Any credible threat to our schools or children will be dealt with as swiftly and thoroughly as the current laws allow. We would like to ask for your cooperation in maintaining a calm and positive atmosphere for our children as they strive to receive a stellar education in these uncertain times. The George County Sheriff’s Office, the George County Superintendent’s Office, and the Lucedale Police Department are all committed to going above and beyond to protect the youngest members of this community, and we appreciate your continued support in our mission to serve the citizens of George County. If you do have any information regarding any threats or behavior that may affect our students, please contact the George County School District School Resource Officers, the George County Sheriff’s Office, or the Lucedale Police Department.
